As in previous versions, the system C drive runs out of space in a Windows 11 computer. What will you do in that case? Reinstall the operating system and all programs? Many people ask whether it is possible to extend the system partition in Windows 11 without losing data. The answer is yes. Windows 11 native Disk Management can help you under certain conditions. However, to accomplish this task more easily, disk partition software is a better choice. This article introduces how to extend the system partition in a Windows 11 computer using both the native tool and free partition software.

1. How to Extend the System Partition in Windows 11 Without Software
Since Windows 7, a new "Extend Volume" function has been added to Disk Management. It has the ability to extend an NTFS partition without losing data. However, it only works when there is contiguous Unallocated space on the right side. Disk Management cannot make such required Unallocated space by shrinking a partition. Therefore, you must delete the adjacent volume behind the system partition in advance. Otherwise, the Extend Volume option is disabled.
How to extend the system partition in Windows 11 without software:
- Right-click the Windows logo on the taskbar and click Disk Management in the list.
- Right-click the drive that is behind the system partition (such as D:) and select "Delete Volume".
- Right-click the system partition C and select the "Extend Volume" option.
- Simply click the Next button until Finish in the pop-up Extend Volume Wizard.
Caution: Do not delete the D drive if you installed programs on it. If you can delete it, remember to transfer your files before deleting.
If you want to extend the system partition for a Windows 11 computer without deleting any volume and keep everything the same as before, disk partition software is needed.
2. How to Extend the Windows 11 System Volume with Free Software
Third-party software can make Unallocated space on the left when shrinking a partition, so the C drive can be extended easily with the adjacent Unallocated space. In this way, the operating system, programs, associated settings, and everything else remain the same as before.
There is a potential risk of system damage and data loss while shrinking partitions. Therefore, back up your data in advance and run safe partitioning software. Better than other tools, NIUBI Partition Editor has powerful Hot-Clone, Virtual Mode, Cancel-at-will, and 1-Second Rollback technologies to protect your system and data.
NIUBI Partition Editor has a free edition for Windows 11/10/8/7/Vista/XP home computer users, which is 100% clean without any bundles. To shrink and extend a partition, you just need to click, drag, and drop.
Download this tool, and you will see all storage devices with their partition layouts and other detailed information on the main window.
How to extend the system partition in Windows 11 without losing data:
- Right-click the adjacent partition D (or E: in some computers) and select the "Resize/Move Volume" option, then drag the left border rightward in the pop-up window. If you want to get an integer Unallocated space, enter an amount in the box for "Unallocated space before".
- Right-click the system partition C: and select "Resize/Move Volume" again, then drag the right border rightward to merge this Unallocated space.
- Click OK and back on the main window, click Apply on the top left to take effect.
If you want to extend the C drive by shrinking a non-adjacent partition, there is an additional step to move the Unallocated space to the left before adding it to the C drive. Follow the steps in the video to enlarge the C drive in a Windows 11 laptop, desktop, or tablet:
In a few computers, there is only a single C drive or not enough free space on the system disk. In that case, you can clone the Windows 11 disk to a larger one and extend the system partition with extra disk space. Note that no software can extend a partition in Windows 11 by adding space from a different or separate disk.
3. How to Extend the OS Partition in Windows 11 with a Larger Disk
If there are no other partitions on the system disk and the C drive is full, clone the disk to a larger one. On the larger disk, you can add additional space to the C drive.
Steps to extend the OS partition in Windows 11 by cloning to a larger disk:
- Connect the larger disk to this computer.
- Right-click the leftmost area of the system disk (Disk 0 in most cases) and select "Clone Disk".
- Select the larger disk in the next window. Note: All partitions on this disk must be deleted to continue.
- Edit the partition size and location, starting from the last one.
- Click Apply to take effect. Remember to click the option to turn off the computer.
- Replace the original system disk or change the BIOS to boot from the larger disk.
Watch the video to see how to operate:
If there are other partitions on the system disk and you do not want to clone the disk, you can move a partition to another disk, then delete it and add its space to the C drive.
Besides shrinking, moving, and extending partitions in a Windows 11/10/8/7/Vista/XP computer, this free partition software helps you perform many other disk partition management operations, such as merging, converting, wiping, hiding, defragging partitions, optimizing file systems, and scanning for bad sectors.
